History of the World Federation of Amateur Orchestras (WFAO)

First period (1991- 1997)

"The World Youth Orchestra Conference"
(
Main contents

  The first "World Youth Orchestra Conference" was held in March 1991. The conference was repeated every year until 1996 and from there on it adopted the name TYOC.

 The first World Youth Orchestras Festival was organized in August 1993

Purpose and meaning

  The purpose was to promote and increase Youth Orchestras activities worldwide through information exchange and the establishment of exchange programs

Accomplishments

 Organization of a Youth Orchestra Festivals.
Worldwide foundation of new Youth Orchestras
Publishing of Youth Orchestra Journal.
Organization of an annual world conference of Youth Orchestras representatives.
Exchange of information about performance and other Youth Orchestras activities in the world.

Second Period (1997- 2004)

Taking its roots from the World Youth Orchestra Organization (WYOC) a new World Federation of Amateur Orchestras was established under the logo WFAO

Main objectives 

  August, 1997: Establishment of the preparatory committee.

  August, 1998: Starting in 1998 the WFAO held an annual meeting until 2001.

Purpose and meaning 

  To promote worldwide exchanges between member Youth Orchestras and Adult Amateur orchestras.

Accomplishments 

  Implementation of exchange programs and cooperation between member orchestras, aiming at improving mutual understanding.

International meeting in Caracas, Venezuela, organized by FESNOJIV

The third period (starting in 2004)

"The WFAO New Era"

Main activities 

  September, 2004: Meeting of international representatives in Amsterdam
 August, 2005: Meeting of international representatives in Nagoya

Significance 

 WFAO will henceforth extend its efforts beyond information and other exchange programs and promote active support to orchestras world wide.

Accomplishments 

  Renewal of the WFAO Website in order to promote easy mail and information exchange between the members of the Federation and beyond the establishment of exchange programs WFAO was able last year to send a significant contribution to South Africa's Youth Orchestra.
